Adoption Update

Che Mar Blitzer has been adopted and is in his new home. Congratulations to his new family!

We are planning to get in more retired racers on January 18. If you're interested in adopting, please see our Volunteer & Adoption Forms and fill out an application. Note that going forward in 2014, our adoption fee will be increased to $300 to compensate for rising transportation costs.

If you're thinking about adopting, you might not want to wait until dogs are posted on our Available page...since GAGR does not run a kennel, we are limited in the number of 'extra' dogs we can take in--it depends on whether we have foster families able to take in a hound or two temporarily. Since sometimes we have a few applications approved in advance of the next transport, the 'extra' dogs might get adopted before they ever even make it to the 'Available' list. Especially if you have something specific (and more popular) in mind (small, female, cat friendly, a specific color), you should contact us (contact@greyhoundadopt.org) and let us know what you're looking for--it's very possible we can work with the groups supplying our dogs and find what you want.

Also, we're always happy to have families willing to foster greyhounds temporarily. We cover the vet bills and food for foster dogs--you provide the home and the love until they're ready to go to their forever family. Some people say it would be too heartbreaking to take in a greyhound and then to have to give them up later--but it can be a rewarding experience knowing you've made it possible for more retired racers to make their way to good homes. Just think of it as babysitting someone else's dog for awhile. And, if you do 'fail' fostering--believe me, you wouldn't be alone among our volunteers. ;)

Happy Holidays to you and your hounds!
