McGrath was adopted on 02/94 by Jo Anne Leegant and Jan
Egger. McGrath our 13 ½ year old red-fawn
greyhound, went to the Rainbow Bridge on Friday morning, February 27, 2004. For
more than a year, he had experienced a neurological problem which caused his rear
legs to slowly collapse when he was standing still. When it first started, his
legs would work again when he started walking; by the end, there were times that
he could barely walk at all. He had to roll his body back and forth to get up
the momentum to get up out of bed. But he never gave up and he never gave in;
he kept on trying. When I tried to lift him gently, to help him in and out of
the van or up the stairs, he resisted. He was independent; he wanted to do it
himself. Up until his last few days, he managed
to complete his favorite walk around the woods twice a day. The times that I left
him at home, as I thought it was too much for him; he was visibly upset. He wanted
to be with the rest of us. He knew that when he could no longer walk in the woods,
or even around the block, we would keep our promise to him and let him go while
he still had his dignity. And we did. It was the right time for him to go, but
it could never be the right time for us. We miss him so. |
